When Stuff Isn’t Funny Anymore

In the show Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix, the character Titus Andromedon, an aspiring actor who happens to be black, has a job as a werewolf at a dinner theater restaurant in New York City.

He would put on his werewolf makeup at home and then head to the restaurant. What he found was that when he was in full werewolf getup, he would be treated really well by strangers, better than if he were to go out as recognizably black.

I’m not going to lie to you Marge, it was pretty hilarious when he talked about all the nice stuff that happened to him as a werewolf because it was so exaggerated. I mean, come on, would people really have more respect for someone who looks like an animal rather than a black man?

Having said that, most of the internet is in an uproar over the poaching of Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe by an American dentist. And, well, we should be upset at this dentist guy. Why would he feel the need to kill such a majestic animal? It’s ridiculous and he never should have done that.

However, let’s not forget about all the injustice that’s happening here on our own land with human beings. I don’t even know how many people to include on this list. For starters, what we are being told of the “suicide” of Sandra Bland, who was stopped for a minor traffic violation, while in custody still doesn’t feel right. Samuel DuBose, an unarmed black man, was recently shot in the head by an officer after being stopped for a minor traffic issue. We have of course Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Oscar Grant, the list goes and on.

This definitely isn’t a knock on everyone posting a lot of stuff about Cecil, promise. We should be outraged about that. That shouldn’t be the only thing that we should be outraged about though and it just happened to strike me today how maybe Titus’s fictional experience as depicted in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt wasn’t that far off.

Here’s the Tumblr post from someone of a series of gifs of Titus’s explaining his experience as a werewolf to Kimmy. I enjoyed the series in general and if you like 30 Rock, check it out. Here’s wishing the actor that plays Titus, Tituss Burgess, luck with his Emmy nomination! Dude is awesome in the role.
