I usually am not very serious on my blog but I wanted to say just a bit about Syria. Three years ago, the civil war in Syria began and there has been so much death and destruction as the region has been laid to waste. Here’s a two minute video guide to the conflict from the BBC if you aren’t familiar with it.
Here are some stats:
– By July 2013, more than 100,000 people had been killed. The UN doesn’t update the toll anymore as apparently there aren’t any reliable sources now but activists in the region believe that number is now over 140,000
– 2.5 million Syrians, mostly women and children, have fled Syria and have become refugees in neighboring countries
– 6.5 million Syrians are displaced within the country
The BBC also has a story of the conflict in 8 chapters to break down the different aspects of the conflict, including information about those displaced.
To create awareness for the child refugees from the Syrian conflict, the organization Save the Children UK produced this intense and disturbing “Second a Day” video for a perspective of what war does to children.
Charities such as Islamic Relief have campaigns specifically for Syria, helping refugees and also Syrians still in the country. Check out Islamic Relief’s campaign here.
There are a host of other charities helping the Syrians as well. You can find a list at With Syria.
Try to donate and if you can’t, at least keep the Syrians in your prayers. Thanks everyone :)
