The big news on the interweb today was that Disney purchased Lucasfilms for 4 billion dollars and plans to produce new Star Wars films, with the first one out in a few years. Right now, the Star Wars film is being referred to as Episode 7, which would put it after Return of the Jedi.
There have been a lot of jokes about what a Star Wars film produced by Disney will look like (and that Leia is now a Disney Princess) but I’m thrilled by this.
The truth is that so much time and effort has spent on what happened before Star Wars: A New Hope (the first movie/4th episode, y’know how it works) and I don’t care about any of it. The three prequels weren’t that great and even though I heard that the Clone Wars cartoons are supposed to be good, what’s the point? You already know how things are going to turn out and what happens to Anakin Skywalker. And don’t give me any of that “it’s the journey” mumbo jumbo. Not in this case, no, because what we are stuck with is a character that for some reason, always comes off as annoying.
Let me tell you about something that happened…
A couple of years ago, I was over at a friend’s house and I ended up talking to their kid, who was about 5 at the time. He was coloring in pictures from the Clone Wars series and was telling me about Anakin Skywalker as he colored it in.
“Yeah, Anakin is the bad guy,” I stated as what I was thought was fact.
The kid stopped coloring, looked up at me and gave me a strange look. “No he’s not,” he said.
Because of the Clone Wars cartoons, an entire generation of kids think Anakin Skywalker is a good guy, the hero. Sorry, he’s not. He’s Darth Vader and the sooner we get past that the better.
Seriously, what’s the point of the Clone Wars stuff if we already have 4 Star Wars films that take place after that? I want to know what happens after the Ewoks defeat the Empire, thankyouverymuch.*
If this Disney deal makes it so, then I’m down for that.
On io9, one of the suggestions they had was for the new movies to be adaptations of the Admiral Thrawn Trilogy, which would be pretty cool. These books take place 5 years after Return of the Jedi and therefore tread new ground when it comes to Star Wars movies. The storyline was intriguing, there are some interesting new characters, and we get to also see our favorite characters and find out what happens to them.**
Or don’t do the Thrawn trilogy, that’s fine too. Just do something that takes place after ROTJ. Anything.
However, I’d love it if they also focused on the story and dialogue this time around in addition to the effects. I can’t take scenes anymore like of Padme Amidala combing her hair while asking Anakin if he’s “blinded by love”. Gag.
To the next Star Wars movies… InshAllah may they be awesome.

*The Rebel Alliance may have also had a hand in defeating the Empire.
** I actually wouldn’t mind too much if they had different actors play Han Solo, Leia, and Luke since the original actors may be older than the characters at this point.
